The patron Saint of Rio de Janeiro is Saint Sebastian.
The patron Saint of Brazil is Our Lady of Aparecida, which is an apparition of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, that appeared in Brazil to some fishermen in 1717. The Lady is a Black Madonna, pictured below:
A Black Madonna is a Catholic engraving in which the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears with a dark facial complexion. The Black Madonna traditional links back to the European medieval period. There is no consensus on why Europeans chose to display the mother of Jesus as “black” using ebony wood, though some argue the Black Madonnas recall pre-Christian pagan religions that influenced the early Catholic Church. Regardless, these images abound in Europe.
