Brazil’s first woman President takes office (January 1, 2011)

President Dilma, of Brazil, began her term on January 1 in Brasilia, the national capital.  Here is the video of her first speech as President.  Dilma is a former left-wing radical who spent time in captivity where her captors tortured her.  In the 1960s she fought against the right-wing military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985.
