Watch the full episode of Skip Gates’ “Black in Latin America” series here!  this episode is titled “Brazil: A Racial Paradise?”

In this episode, Professor Gates visited Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Minas Gerais. In all locations he spoke with Brazilians on the topic of what it means to Black in the nation. Unlike the United States where there was/is apparently a concrete/clear definition of who is black, in Brazil people of color can define themselves along a spectrum of labels instead of “black”.

Professor Gates also visited a descendant of Gilberto Freyre, whom I mentioned in a prior post (https://braziltravelcenter.wordpress.com/2011/04/03/how-to-fit-in-with-brazilians-part-ii-aka-step-up-your-game/), the famous author of the classic The Masters and the Slaves on the enduring impact of the book. As I stated you need to read this book to comprehend how many Brazilians perceive of the impact of historic race mixing.

I enjoyed this show and my husband and children and I had a wonderful discussion on the topic this morning. I am going out to try and purchase the Freyer book today.
I would like to know when the show will air again.
