As Rio de Janiero prepares for the global stage when it holds the World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games in a few years, it seems authorities are cracking down on irregularities in clubs. This raid took place in June. I noticed the place was closed down and even got into a small argument with a detective when I asked when the place would re-open.
Police are also harassing hawkers of DVD movies. In the past, first-run Hollywood films could be bought on the streets of Rio for as little as $3US. Now the hawkers are selling films that have been on DVD for a few months rather than first-run features.
