***Note: The matches have ended. Check back next Sunday for more televised games from Rio and Sao Paulo in Brazil!****

Soccer (futebol) is the national pastime of Brazil. Every Brazilian seems to have a favorite soccer club that they live and cry for depending on the ebbs and flows of the season or a particular game. On Sundays, Cariocas (the nickname for residents of Rio de Janeiro) usually attend mass then hit the beach to catch a a few rays of sun or a quick swim. The next event is watching the soccer matches! If not attending a match at the stadium, then people either watch at home on TV or at the local corner bar. During the matches you can tell who is winning based on the screams heard throughout the streets and apartment buildings.

There are two big matches today: Vasco de Gama vs. Flamengo. These are two rivals from Rio. Flamengo is arguably the most popular club in Rio. Ronaldinho, the Brazilian national Olympic team star, plays for Flamengo.
