Brazil: Prisoners Get Four Days Off Sentence Per Book Read · Global Voices

In an attempt to rehabilitate prisoners, reduce overcrowding, and increase literacy, Brazilian officials have issued a directive allowing for prisoners to receive four days off their sentence per book read while incarcerated.  This move demonstrates a positive humanitarian approach to incarceration that challenges the image of Brazilian (and other South American) prisons as asylums dominated by the meanest prisoners with little intervention from the guards.
